Club Holiday to Whitby 2024
Margaret Abbott has kindly provided the following write up for the Spring Whitby holiday 2024.
Thanks to Peter Johnson’s suggestion of a holiday to Whitby, twenty six of us joined him and Margaret on a five day Leon’s bus tour. We stayed at the long established Royal Hotel, which sits above the town next to the Whalebone Arch, with views towards the Abbey.
On the journey to the hotel on Monday, we were treated to a stop in Thirsk, a busy little market town which was a nice change from a motorway service station. The journey to Whitby also took in a local landmark, Roseberry Topping, which is North Yorkshire’s Shuttlingsloe.
A sea fret (sea mist) covered the area the next morning as non walkers were taken to join the North Yorkshire Moors Railway at Goathland. The mist had cleared as we boarded the train and we arrived in Pickering to spend a few sunny hours there. Returning, we stopped off at Robin Hood’s Bay, where some of the group made their way down the steep hill to stretch their legs.
On Wednesday the sun continued to shine when those of us who had opted to travel to Scarborough set off. Sitting on the seafront with a delicious ice cream was delightful and brought back many memories.
When we rejoined the coach we were taken to the Scarborough Fair Museum South of Scarborough. No one really knew what we were going to encounter, but what a delight! We were treated to a Wurlitzer Organ recital as we sat and ate sandwiches and cakes from the cafe. A free ride on a carousel and then a children’s roundabout (being tested) brought out the inner child in us all.
Vintage cars, bikes, buses and other mechanical musical devices plus little reminders of our childhood were so well put together.
On Thursday there was a free day so that people could arrange to do whatever they wished. Again the weather was kind to us.
A couple of musical evenings and Peter’s quizzes provided some interesting evening entertainment after a substantial three course meal.
We left Whitby on the Friday morning, breathing a sigh of relief that the weather had been kind to us. The trip home was straightforward with only one service station stop.
Thank you Peter for suggesting the trip. I for one enjoyed every minute of it. I hope that my home county was able to impress and that you may return in the future.
